What Might Affect Your Storage Unit Price?

Competition

Our prices fluctuate periodically. That’s because we consistently monitor the market to ensure we are priced better than our competition.

Location

Operating costs vary from location to location, so our storage unit prices vary as well. If you are storing your items at our facilities in Manhattan, for example, your storage unit might be priced more than if you were storing your items in Brooklyn.

Storage Unit Size

This probably goes without saying, but the size of the storage unit you rent plays a major role in how much you pay. The bigger the unit, the more it costs.

In an effort to keep your costs as low as possible, however, we encourage you to figure out just how much space you’ll need. If you aren’t sure, you can always use our convenient storage space calculator so you never pay for space you don’t need.

Special Features

We offer additional features and services that could affect the monthly price you pay with us. For instance, if you opt for a climate-controlled storage unit, you will pay more than if you rent a unit without climate-control. Click here to see why you might want to rent a climate-controlled storage unit.

We also offer self-storage insurance to help you protect your things when they are with us. Climate-Controlled Storage: Why and When It’s a Good Idea

With climate-controlled storage, the temperature inside your self-storage unit is held constant, usually between 55-85 degrees. Climate-controlled storage is ideal for all of your belongings because it protects them from extreme heat and cold, humidity, and pests. That said, it costs a premium to rent a climate-controlled unit, so you’ll likely want to consider what you are storing in order to decide if it’s worth the extra expense (see the below list).

You’ll also want to consider how long you will be storing your items for. If they will be stored for 1 year or more, then climate-controlled storage should be considered. Finally, whether or not you need climate-controlled storage also depends on your climate. If you are exposed to extreme temperatures in your area, then climate-controlled storage should be considered.

10 Items You’ll Want to Store in a Climate-Controlled Unit:

  1. Household Appliances. Climate-Controlled units can prevent electronic and mechanical parts of your appliances from cracking and rust that could cause permanent damage, and can also can aid in stopping mold and mildew from building up inside appliances.

  2. Electronics. If you don’t store electronics in a climate-controlled unit, the moisture that accumulates as a result of rising humidity levels can have the same effect as a direct water spill – we are talking rusting and broken wiring.

  3. Wood Furniture. Prevent your wood from cracking, warping or rotting from over-exposure to moisture over time.

  4. Leather Furniture. Avoid discolored pieces and mildew.

  5. Documents. Prevent important paperwork from fading, discoloration, or dissolution from exposure to moisture.

  6. Special Collections. Things like coins, stamps, comics and wine need to be stored at a constant temperature in order to keep a consistent quality and maintain value.

  7. Artwork. Even if you’re keeping artwork in file cabinets or diameter tubes in your unit, it’s important to maintain the unit’s temperature with a climate-controlled unit.

  8. Musical instruments. Keep your percussion, string, brass and woodwind instruments from warping, rusting, becoming corroded, and just plain breaking and falling apart (think strings snapping).

  9. Photos and Film. To preserve these well, store them in a climate-controlled unit and ensure they are kept in boxes or albums that have passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT).

  10. Clothes. Prevent mold and mildew by cleaning anything you want to store, and then storing the clothing in a climate-controlled unit.

In addition to the above, when storing bikes, medications and medical supplies, candles, antiques, and cosmetics, you should also consider climate-controlled storage units.

Self-Storage Insurance: Why and When It’s a Good Idea

You may have heard that your standard homeowners, renters, or business insurance policy will cover your property regardless of where it is located – including your self-storage unit. That’s true, but there are limitations on the coverage when stored outside of your home or business (considered “off premises by insurance companies).

Typically, you are covered for just 10% of the amount of coverage you have in your policy. To illustrate, if you have a policy limit of $500,000, items in your storage unit are covered up to $50,000. That is one consideration when you are considering purchasing an additional self-storage insurance policy.
