Private storage is when an individual rents a storage space for the short or long term, for example during a move, a renovation, a life transition, or simply to declutter.
There are two types of storage services: self storage, where you transport your belongings to and from the facility yourself, and full-service storage, where the storage provider collects and returns your items for you.
When do you need extra storage?
There are several common situations in which private storage solves a temporary space issue. Depending on the situation, both the storage duration and the required storage volume vary:
- Moving: to bridge the period between two moving dates. This usually does not last longer than 1-2 months. For a studio, 3-5 m³ is often sufficient, while an apartment with 1-2 bedrooms typically requires 6-10 m³.
- Renovation: to keep your household goods protected and safe during construction work. Renovations often take 1-3 months, depending on the scale and complexity of the project. The required storage space is usually between 6-12 m³, depending on the type of home, how many rooms are being renovated, and whether large items need to be stored such as furniture or kitchen units.
- Moving in together or separating: so you can take the time to sort through your and your partner’s belongings. The duration of this process varies greatly per couple but averages between 2 and 6 months. The required storage space is usually no more than 10 m³.
- Seasonal storage (winter/summer): to store items that are not used frequently, keeping your home tidy. Between summer and winter this is often 3-6 months, and you usually only need 1-4 m³ of storage space.
- Expat or student housing: to avoid issues with limited space, moving dates, and time spent abroad. Depending on the length of the study or stay, the rental period can range from 2 to 12+ months. These are usually small homes, so around 3-6 m³ is typically sufficient.
The advantages of private storage
Private storage offers flexibility, security, and convenience for private users. One of the main advantages is flexible rental terms, allowing you to easily upgrade or downgrade your storage space.
In addition, private storage is a comfortable and secure solution for space needs. Many facilities offer 24/7 access or extended opening hours. With full-service storage, this convenience is reflected in the option to have your items collected and delivered on demand.
Security and insurance options may vary by facility. Storage locations are typically secured with CCTV surveillance and access control. Most providers also offer a basic insurance policy, either included or available as an add-on.
Another advantage of private storage is cost transparency. Costs are usually calculated per m³ per month, making them predictable. Discounts are often available for longer rental periods, without long-term obligations, such as a minimum storage size.
If convenience is your priority, full-service storage offers the most benefits. Your items are collected, loaded, returned, and unloaded at your home. You can contact customer service for advice on the right storage size, helping you avoid renting too much or too little space.
How private storage works
The process of renting private storage starts with booking and continues through to collecting or returning your items:
- Request a quote and reserve storage space
- Bring your items to the location or have them collected, depending on the service
- Secure storage of your items with an inventory
- Access or customer service when needed
- Collect your items or have them delivered, depending on the service
When choosing full-service storage, it is useful to know what to expect during pick-up and return delivery. On the collection day, your items are picked up at your home, loaded, and transported to the facility by the provider. In most cases, you are responsible for packing your items in advance. When you need some or all of your belongings back, they will be delivered to your home again.
Contact the storage provider to schedule an appointment. Often, an appointment can be arranged within 24 hours, depending on the location, the required storage size, and whether it is outside peak season. If you need to change or cancel an appointment, please notify the provider at least 48 business hours in advance.
Is your storage space secure and insured?
Safe and insured storage ensures that your belongings are protected throughout the storage period. Storage companies that take the right steps and measures help minimise risks such as theft and damage.
The security of private storage spaces goes beyond a simple lock on the door. It is typically a layered system consisting of CCTV camera surveillance, burglar alarms, access control such as ID checks and/or entry logs, fire and moisture protection through climate-controlled spaces, and background checks for staff. Additional security measures may sometimes be available; ask your provider about these options if needed.
As a user, you also share responsibility for the safety and protection of your belongings. Pack your items correctly, do not store prohibited goods such as food or flammable substances, and comply with the storage provider’s terms and conditions.
If you are unsure whether your inventory is stored safely, you can go through the following checklist:
- Have I packed and inventoried my items according to the guidelines? → Yes/No
- Is the storage space dry and protected against weather and climate influences? → Yes/No
- Is the storage space secured and accessible only to me or to people authorised by me? → Yes/No
- Am I sufficiently insured through the storage provider, or is it covered by my own household insurance? → Yes/No
