Why you need Selfstorage Insurance when you rent SelfStorage

Self storage insurance paper being signedWe know the possessions you store with us are valuable, and that’s why we go the extra mile to ensure they are safe and secure while they are here.

Unfortunately, however, we can’t always control what happens, so we’ve put in place a customizable insurance plan to protect your things when we can’t.

When you rent a storage unit from Boxie24 Storage, you will be asked to purchase an insurance policy that covers the value of your stored items.

Alternately, you can show proof of existing insurance that covers the value, should you have it elsewhere.

It’s important to establish this coverage at the time of rental so your belongings are protected from such things as fire, flood, vermin and more as soon as they enter a storage unit within our facility.

What Boxie24 Storage Insurance Protects Against

Storing your things in self storage affords many benefits, but it also comes with a few risks as well. Our self storage insurance covers the many perils of this type of storage so you don’t have to worry about being reimbursed should something unfortunate happen.

Our policies cover such things as:

  • Fire

  • Flooding

  • Vermin infestation

  • Earthquake

  • Theft*

  • Vandalism

  • Vehicle or aircraft impact

Having a separate insurance policy such as this protects your homeowners insurance, as well. Claims made for damage or loss to your things in storage don’t have to affect a clean homeowner’s insurance policy.

*It’s important to note a special circumstance concerning theft. Should belongings within a storage unit go missing without obvious evidence of a break-in, it might be a little more difficult to establish a claim.

Taking a photo inventory of your belongings at the time of storage helps prove their existence and adds credibility to a claim.

Self storage insurance - pile of papers Homeowner’s Insurance may not be Enough

Some basic homeowner’s insurance policies include belongings in storage, but this coverage is minimal at best and usually doesn’t meet the special requirements of self storage.

For instance, many policies only cover about 10 percent of the homeowner’s personal property limit.

So, if the limit is $100,000,  only $10,000 worth of personal property in storage is covered.

Of course, policy terms and limitations vary, and many policies don’t even cover self storage, so it’s important to check with your insurance agent to find out.

It’s also important to note here, that in most cases, homeowner’s insurance policies don’t even cover flood or water damage at all unless you purchase a rider to that effect.

So, should another tenant forget to defrost a freezer before storing it in the unit next door, for instance, and it melts and leaks into the adjoining unit and damages another tenant’s belongings, a typical homeowner’s insurance policy probably wouldn’t cover the damage.

Items not allowed at Boxie24 Storage

Boxie24 Storage accommodates just about anything you wish to store, but in order to comply with government regulations, as well as our own property insurance policies, we have to exclude some items from our storage units. You are not allowed to store such things as:

  • Toxic goods or pollutants

  • Live animals or plants

  • Firearms or ammunition

  • Flammable or hazardous materials

  • Food and/or perishables

  • Radioactive materials

  • Cash or jewelry**

  • Illegal items

  • Waste materials

**Rather than store cash or valuable jewelry in your storage unit, we recommend renting a safety deposit box at a bank. In addition to being more secure, some homeowner’s insurance policies actually offer discounts for this type of smart safe-keeping.
