People from all around the world store their belongings in storage units. From the average homeowner to an office manager to the most eccentric celebrity, it’s safe to say that just about every type of person uses a storage unit at some point.
While it’s true that most of these people use their storage units to keep mundane things like household goods, office equipment, and the occasional vehicle, sometimes the things they store and leave behind in their units is just plain shocking.
What kinds of things are we talking about here? Well, don’t say we didn’t warn you. Here are some of the weirdest, most exciting – and downright creepiest – things found in storage units to date.
It’s not unusual to find guns, ammunition, and other hunting equipment inside a storage unit, but one Michigan man got the surprise of his life when he found a live hand grenade.
Fearing for his safety and that of others in the area, he called the local police, who subsequently called the bomb squad, who disarmed the device without incident. How’s that for excitement?
When Michael Jackson died, everyone thought his music died with him. Turns out this wasn’t the case when one lucky person bought a storage unit belonging to Michael’s dad, Joe Jackson.
Inside that unit was more than 250 songs recorded by Michael Jackson (some with Tina Turner) that were never released. Since no recording company had any legal claims to the songs, the buyer retained ownership, totaling millions of dollars. Wonder if he moonwalked all the way to the bank?
Like we said earlier, all types of people use storage units – even NASA.
Back in 2011, an episode of Spike TV’s Auction Hunters aired showing an intense bidding war at a storage facility in Florida, close to Cape Canaveral.
When one winner opened the storage unit he won, he found a discontinued rocket and countdown clock once used by NASA.
An anonymous buyer from San Jose dished out $1,100 for a storage unit at an auction. Little did he know that it would bring him a return on his investment he never saw coming.
Inside the unit was a Rubbermaid tote full of rare coins and gold and silver ingots worth more than $500,000. Talk about having a lucky day.
Now for something on the creepier side of things. In 2012, Robert Dewey escaped from a mental hospital in Long Beach and was re-arrested after threatening to kill the pop star, Madonna.
Before his initial arrest, however, Robert obtained a storage unit that he used to house a number of creepy items.
The buyer who bought the storage unit in 2012 shared the contents of the unit, which included a headless doll, knives, a scary clown mask, a Barbie backpack, a sumo wrestler doll, and a wealth of Madonna memorabilia. We think we speak for everyone when we say we’re glad this creepy stalker is back behind locked doors.
Some people paint and others scrapbook. For Dr. Michael Berkland, however, these hobbies were just not exciting enough. You see, Dr. Berkland was a medical examiner in Pensacola.
During his tenure as a medical examiner, he liked to take his work home with him, or rather, to his storage unit. When we say “work,” we actually mean body parts.
Dr. Berkland stored a wide array of body parts from more than 100 people, and when an unlucky soul bought his storage unit in 2012, he uncovered them all.
The contents of the storage unit included 10 brains, hearts, lungs, and various tissue samples – all poorly preserved in Styrofoam cups, Tupperware containers, specimen cups, and garbage bags. The interesting part of all this is the fact that Dr. Berkland was fired from his job in 2003 for neglecting his paperwork duties. Maybe he didn’t have time, what with all the time he spent at his storage unit and all.
People store just about anything inside storage units, and for one reason or another many of them fail to return to claim those items. For those who eventually claim ownership of the long-forgotten contents, the thrill of what they’ll find keeps them buying again and again. Sometimes they find treasures like the unreleased Michael Jackson songs, and sometimes, they uncover some of the weirdest and creepiest things imaginable.
