Need Storage Space? Here’s What to ask the Storage Facility First.

There’s no shortage of storage facilities these days, that’s for sure. This isn’t to say, however, that one is like the next. In fact, the opposite is true. Each storage facility is different, and you should know a few things before you decide to store your things in one.

Whether you’re moving from one house to another, or you’re looking for business self storage, it’s important you ask the right questions up front to ensure your things are safe and secure while with the storage facility. Here are several questions you should ask before renting a unit with any storage place.

What Kind of Storage System Do You Have?

You may not know much about security systems yourself, but if they know the answer to this question, it lets you know they do. You’ll have peace of mind knowing your things are in secure self storage.

Is the Facility Patrolled?

This probably isn’t as important as having a good security system, but if the facility is regularly patrolled, it gives you one more reason to feel your things are safe in their possession.

Does Each Building Have a Smoke Detector?

This is most likely a yes, but it’s always a good idea to make sure before storing your things with the company.

In Case of Fire, Is There a Sprinkler System?

Every storage company should have standard safety protocols in place. This includes a sprinkler system in case of fire.

Do I Have Unrestricted Access to My Storage Unit?

Some storage facilities allow unrestricted access, and some don’t. There are pros and cons to both types of storage, so you’ll have to decide which works best for you.

Unrestricted access allows you to put things in and take things out of your unit anytime you want. While convenient, it’s not quite as secure with people coming and going at will. Restricted public access might be a little less convenient, but it’s more secure. Furthermore, it’s also less work on your part because the facility usually picks up and delivers your things for free.

Are Storage Units Available on a Month-to-Month Basis?

Most storage providers allow month-to-month contracts; however, many offer significant discounts for paying up front or paying annually. Some even have incentives for referring new customers to them.

Can I View Photos of the Facility and an Actual Empty Storage Unit?

The storage facility should be able to provide you with photos or be able to direct you to their website where you can see them. This is important as it gives you a visual idea of how much space you’ll be renting.

Have You Had Any Break-ins or Vandalism?

You can check online and with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for customer reviews on the storage company, but it’s also a good idea to ask if they’ve had any break-ins or vandalism and how it occurred. If the company corrected any security issues after an incident, you know they are serious about keeping your things safe.

Things to Look for if Visiting the Storage Facility in Person

If you’re able to visit the storage facility in person before renting, here are a few observations to make.

  • Are the grounds and facility well-kept and clean?

  • Are there any overgrown bushes around the building? This could be a security issue as it allows potential attackers to hide.

  • Is there proper lighting both inside and outside the storage facility?

  • Is there a security fence? Is it intact all the way around?

  • Where are security cameras located?

  • Is the staff courteous and professional?

  • How comfortable are you with leaving your things in their care?

When considering a storage facility, it’s important to know as much as possible before placing your things there. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and if the answers you get make you feel uneasy or something doesn’t feel right, move on to another facility. It’s always better to be safe than sorry where storing your things is concerned.
